Living a Purpose-Driven Life: Kenneth Scott’s Impact On and Off the Field

David Frandsen

I first became familiar with Kenneth Scott as a football player at the University of Utah. He was a skilled athlete who always seemed to come through with massive catches when the game was on the line. I'll never forget his incredible one-handed grab against Arizona State at Rice-Eccles Stadium. From the stands I honestly didn’t think he caught it, but somehow, he did. Kenneth had a knack for going up high and coming down with those 50/50 balls, and I loved watching him play.

For more than 20 years, through Crimson Club and FanFest events, I've had the privilege of meeting most of the University of Utah football players. The first time I met Kenneth was at FanFest, and I had my young son with me. Kenneth couldn't have been more gracious, taking time to make my son feel special. As I have gotten to know him, I can tell you Kenneth was not just a great player, but an even better person who genuinely wants to spread good in this world. I have the highest respect for him, and his life story is truly inspiring. He's not only an incredibly talented football player, but also an exceptionally gifted individual off the field.

Kenneth Scott grew up in Section 8 housing, facing challenges due to his mother's battle with lupus and father's struggles with addiction and incarceration. Despite these hardships, Kenneth found strength in his mother's positivity and the stability brought by his stepfather. This foundation inspired him with a drive to overcome adversity and help others do the same.

As a student-athlete at the University of Utah, he earned two degrees while balancing sports, academics, and community involvement. This earned him recognition as the Most Inspirational Male Student-Athlete. After brief professional stints in the NFL and CFL, Kenneth shifted his energy to social work, where he has found purpose helping families and communities. Kenneth has also thrived in the corporate world as a top sales consultant and executive leader, coaching others on improving business metrics.

Recognizing the power of combining social services and sales, Scott founded the Social Health Brand Program. This program equips students with tools to build purposeful brands using social health principles, personal branding, and strategic sales skills. With the vision of inspiring individuals and using his gifts to transform communities, the program is poised for expansion.

Kenneth Scott is a dynamic speaker and leader, known for delivering impactful sessions that inspire change. Through powerful storytelling and insights, he encourages audiences to think creatively, embrace their strengths, and use them to "Leave A Blessing."

Kenneth Scott is also a prolific author with several impactful works to his name. His book "Pressure No Match for Purpose" serves as a guide to help athletes and others navigate life transitions. Scott's literary portfolio also includes "Twenty-Four," a poignant memoir chronicling his late mother Latricia Banks' 24-year battle with Lupus while raising a family and undergoing a kidney transplant.

As his mother's caregiver, Kenneth intimately observed her daily challenges, witnessing firsthand her pain, sacrifices, and unwavering determination to support him holistically—physically, mentally, and emotionally—despite her ongoing health struggles. This deeply personal experience undoubtedly influenced his writing, infusing his work with authenticity and empathy.

Scott is a gifted musician whose anthem "Rise Up," released just prior to the Pac-12 Championship Game, has become one of the most iconic moments in Utah football history. Following its release, his music gained significant traction, being featured in various stadiums, podcasts, radio shows, and television programs. Notably, Kenneth made history as the first musical artist to perform during a halftime show at the University of Utah, further solidifying his connection to the university and its sports community.

Scott’s work emphasizes a purpose-driven approach by doing this you are able to recognize your potential and move beyond traditional limitations. A few of the key takeaways I have learned from Kenneth include:

  • Leveraging personal talents: Utilizing one’s own gifts to create meaningful change for positive impact.

  • Take advantage of obstacles: Have the mindset to view obstacles as opportunities to learn, grow and get better.

  • Control the controllable: Remember you are the one in control of your destiny and how it impacts you.

I believe in using our talents to make a positive impact, and Kenneth does this every day through his work, which truly is changing lives. His story is deeply inspiring, and he serves as a role model for all. As a token of my gratitude, I created a painting of him as a gift, hoping that whenever he sees it, it will remind him of the powerful influence he is having on the world. If you are in need of an inspirational speaker, I highly recommend reaching out to him.

Kenneth Scott’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, purpose, and using one's gifts to uplift others. From overcoming personal hardships to becoming a dynamic force on the football field and in both the professional and social sectors, he continues to inspire countless individuals. Whether through his work in social services, his music, or his powerful speaking engagements, Kenneth’s impact is undeniable. His story reminds us that no matter where we come from or the challenges we face, we all have the potential to make a difference.
